The most common way the wrist is injured is a fall on an outstretched hand. Whether the wrist is broken or ligaments are injured usually depends on many things, such as how strong your bones are, how the wrist is positioned during the injury, and how much force is involved. When you have fallen and injured your wrist, it is important to rest your arm.

In the wrist, bones and ligaments form a "tunnel" in which nerves pass through to the hand. If this "tunnel" becomes inflamed, pressue is placed on the nerves. Wth carpal tunnel syndrome, a nerve in the wrist has pressure placed on it and can result in tingling, numbness, or pain. Some causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include improper or prolonged use of the hand or wrist during activities such as typing, needlework, and working with vibrating tools (such as a drill).

After surgery, it is important to help reduce swelling and pain. Cryotherapy, the application of cold, combined with compression helps to minimize swelling, and pain.

Injury to the hand and wrist is most commonly due to overuse. Repeating the same activity over and over, as when painting a wall, can cause the tendons that attach the muscle to the bone to become inflamed (tendonitis).

Sprains (stretching or tearing of the ligaments) may occur as a result of an injury or a fall.
